Annoying Superstitions
Hardball by CD Reis
Megan had suggested I read this book. I love baseball, Go
Mariners, and who doesn’t love a good looking baseball player. I figured, what
the heck I’ll give it a shot.
The story is about Vivian, a Middle School librarian for the
Los Angeles Unified School District, typical romance leading lady in that she
thinks she’s not attractive and everyone else thinks she’s a knockout. Snore. Vivian
helps out the PE teacher at her Middle School and goes on a field trip to meet
some L.A. Dodger players. This is where our leading man comes in, Dashiell,
Dash, Wallace, who was “proportioned by Da Vinci and sculpted by Michelangelo”.
Shocker, he’s rude to her when she asks
him to sign a ball for her Dad’s birthday.
Magically this guy appears in her school asking if one of
her students stole his glove. Everyone knows baseball players are annoyingly superstitious.
If you didn’t know this, well you do now and the fans are just as bad. So, his
glove is missing and he flirts with her so she will agree to work extra hard to
find it.
When they finally start screwing things get really
weird for me. It takes a lot for me to become uncomfortable and this book made
me REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE. Anytime I hear or read the word “pussy” I cringe.
NOTHING IS SEXY ABOUT THIS WORD. NOTHING. Just stop it. This book uses that word multiple times every time they have sex.
Dash ends up telling her that by spring training they won’t
be seeing each other anymore, which if you honestly think about it being a fan
of baseball I totally see the big name guys who are single doing this. I really
wasn’t shocked by it. He also had some routine he wanted to stick to during
spring training and during the season, aka he wanted to screw these other women
he had lined up to give him his “luck”. Once again…wasn’t shocked. Ha. Annoying
superstitions at work again.
Soon Dash thinks that her “sex juice” is what is giving him luck. Ew. That glove that the kids stole had a pin his dead sister gave him in it, which apparently gave him all his luck before it was stolen. Like I said, annoyingly superstitious. Of course Vivian thinks he only loves her because she brings him luck and has all these seconds thoughts and other things happen because of it, which are stupid but I guess read it if you'd like to find out what happens to Dash and Vivian.
The book down right had no plot to follow and
made me uncomfortable. I don’t even think it deserves one champagne. When I
looked up the review score on Goodreads I was shocked, people actually enjoyed this book. Did they read the same book that I read?
